Secret Invasion: Not Everyone's Watch
Secret Invasion opens this year's Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) television series. Unlike most other films and series in the franchise, Secret Invasion comes with a more serious tone. The thing to watch out for here is "Secret Invasion: Not Everyone's Watch!".

This series doesn't even leave much room for silliness, like the MCU characteristic. The dialogues also tend to be serious and need their attention. This series is the first time the MCU and viewers get to know Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson). Introduced in 2008, Nick's role has always been like a passenger. She is more often in supporting roles than in the main cast. Nick got a new big appearance in Captain Marvel in 2019 or 11 years after making his debut in Iron Man.
Nick Fury Becomes One of the Focuses of the Story
This figure was once one of the determinants of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. However, it wasn't until Secret Invasion that the audience finally got to know him better. Even so, because the series is set after Avengers: Endgame, there are changes that occur in Nick's character. In the series, even Maria Hill (Cobie Smoulder) said that Hulk's blip or snap of his fingers had changed the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
In Secret Invasion, Nick is known to get a special assignment from the president to lead the Sabre project, Earth's strongest defense to repel threats from outer space. This has already been alluded to in Spider-Man: Far from Home. In the film's post-credits scene, Nick is seen somewhere in space. This will be related to The Marvels.

Secret Invasion revolves around a sneak invasion by the Skrulls, shapeshifting green aliens who have inhabited Earth for the past 30 years. They were introduced in Captain Marvel. Their fate is in limbo after being expelled from their planet. Although Carol Danvers tried to find a new place to live, promises were just promises. Some Skrulls even inhabit the earth. One of them is Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) who later becomes Nick Fury's ally. They blend in by displaying their human form.
Feeling abandoned by Carol and Nick who suddenly disappeared, the younger generation of Skrulls finally rebelled. They secretly plan to rule the earth. Talos' daughter, Gi'ah (Emily Clarke), even joins the movement. Talos was in a dilemma because he wanted peace. On the other hand, the death of his wife, Soren, forces Nick to return to Earth.
However, Nick didn't seem to expect that the threat he faced was so great. Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), one of the young Skrulls he knows, leads the invasion movement. He is very charismatic, strategic, and ambitious. He will do whatever it takes to realize his wish to make Earth the new abode of the Skrulls where they can appear without having to form like humans, as they are today.
Secret Invasion will test Nick's resilience. He is not a hero with superpowers who easily bulldozes his opponents. Facing Graviks, Nick needs more than just physical strength, but also intellectual. He could not rely on Talos who was a Skrull and his son joined the Graviks movement. However, Nick is a spy who knows his every move. His decision to meet Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Coleman) will let viewers get to know another character who also seems to be Nick's enemy.
Meanwhile, Nick's position makes him also at odds with the government. Nick is known not to be a person who easily submits to the government and has his instincts. Faced with Graviks, Nick will do whatever it takes to stop the young Skrull. Although it made him have no allies anymore. Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes may try to help, but, again, Nick will be difficult to deal with.
From the first two episodes, Secret Invasion provides an intensive viewing that is unlikely to be a favorite of many. The series is heavy and has a more mature theme than most MCU films and series. Secret Invasion tries to bring political themes like Captain America: The Winter Soldier with a focus on Nick Fury. Just like in The Winter Soldier, Nick will find himself without allies he can trust. Moreover, the Avengers are now in disarray.

The series is slow paced with conflicts building slowly. In addition, as it was called from the beginning, Nick is not a hero with superpowers. He will solve all problems with a more down-to-earth approach. This series feels more relatable because it relies on the human side, not just technology or superpowers. People will see more of what Nick looks like even though many feel that this series is late.
Secret Invasion is a spectacle that MCU fans can enjoy, but not everyone. This series is not purely a superhero story, but more about action. The unfamiliar premise makes ordinary viewers have to look for other references to better understand it. Even so, this series is suitable for fans who want to find other shows outside of the crazy actions of superheroes who are just like that.
Secret Invasion entertains and gives another look at the world of intrigue in the MCU realm. The premise is clearer with villains that may be more "thick" than similar series like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Nick may be experiencing an inner struggle. But, he is not a figure who easily shows his emotions to others.
Secret Invasion starts airing today, Wednesday (21/6), on Disney+ Hotstar. Running for 6 episodes, the series will be updated every Wednesday. One episode is over 50 minutes long. "Secret Invasion: Not Everyone's Watch!". Happy watching!
