"But my mother thought that my sister's hair was ugly, terrible, and disgusting. And she started – when I had long hair – she would introduce us as her beautiful daughter (Sinead) and ugly daughter (older sister). And that's why I shaved my head."
In addition, the 'Nothing Compares 2 U' singer said it would be dangerous if she styled her hair in a more traditional feminine style. Because it can trigger people to disturb him.
"I don't want to be raped. I don't want to be wronged. I don't want to dress like a girl. I don't want to be beautiful," she insisted.
Sinead O'Connor's Career
When she started her career as a singer in 1987, Sinead's appearance with her shaved head was opposed by record labels. At that time the label asked her to grow her hair and wear skirts and high heels.
Sinead rejected him and 'rebelled'. So instead of following the label's request to market her as a 'generic woman', Sinead went straight to the barbershop and shaved off the rest of her hair.
"I'm not going to let any man tell me what to do, or who I want to be," she told The Sun in 2022.
Sinead O'Connor's ex-husband, John Reynolds, who was with her early in her career, said the label could only look at her when she appeared before them with shaved hair. At that time, they realized that they had dealt with opinionated women, had strong ideologies, and did not like to be governed.
"It's a powerful statement from a woman, as if to say, 'Don't mess with me,'" John Reynolds said.
Sinead O'Connor's shaved hairstyle remained for the rest of her career as a musician. She also regularly shaves her head every 10 days, including after wearing a hijab when she converted to Islam in 2018.
