Finnish Happy Secrets Focus on Mindset, Determination, and Grit
"Their No. 1 secret is this 500-year-old mindset," says Finnish psychologist E. Elisabet Lahti, Ph.D.
He was referring to 'sisu' – a concept and way of life that has been woven into Finnish culture for more than hundreds of years.
This mindset focuses on determination and fortitude, especially to move forward and face near-impossible difficulties and opportunities.

"I believe that 'sisu' plays an important role in our well-being and ability to maintain a positive and resilient mindset," said Lahti, who has lived in Finland for most of her life.
But he also argues that this mindset can be imitated by people in other countries to feel just as happy.
Applying 'Sisu' a typical Finnish mindset
Here are three principles that can be done to apply the typical Finnish 'sisu'.
- Find a purpose outside of ourselves
According to research from University of Pennsylvania psychologist Angela Duckworth, we can last even longer when trying to achieve something that contributes to the world outside ourselves.
Lahti gave the example of a 1,500-mile expedition across New Zealand as a movement to raise awareness about family violence.
"Whenever I start to feel tired or close to giving up, moving on to that bigger goal helps me move forward," she explains.
When we face new challenges or need the strength to move on, it's important to find a greater purpose to connect.
The form can be family, friends, someone inspiring, or a certain thing close to our hearts.
- Increase resilience with training
"Practice and preparation make it easier to tap into our inner 'sisu,'" says Lathi.
Studies show that our bodies have hidden reserves that are naturally used when they need it most.
"So, the more we challenge ourselves, the more we learn habits that strengthen our resilience."
- Be gentle with yourself and connect with nature
Some people think we have to be ourselves to be successful.
But Lahti stressed the need to balance resilience and compassion.
"We have to ask ourselves whether to stop or push ourselves more," he said.
Often, these moments will help us appreciate something else that was previously unconscious.
In Finland, nature walking and hiking is a core part of our culture.
He also argues that this habit helps to find inner calm and a sense of happiness that helps us during difficult times.
That's a little information and tips on the mindset that makes Finns the happiest in the world. Hope it is useful.
