The results of the Tour de France 2023 Stage 1 were obtained after the riders sailed the opening stage in Bilbao, Spain, on Saturday, July 1, 2023.
The course of Stage 1 - Tour de France 2023
After an ingenious start across rugged terrain, the race opened wide on the road to Pike Bidea, the final zoned ascent of the bumpy 182km route that starts and ends in Bilbao.
Two-time Tour de France (TdF) winner Tadej Pogacar and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark raced alongside Frenchman Victor Lafay to reach the top first, but they were passed by the Yates brothers (Adam and Simon) as they descended.
The pair opened up a 20-second lead over the chasing group and were left to fight it out to win the stage on their own.

It was Adam who had the most power in the final 500 meters, and he gave a final look back before celebrating with his hands raised as he crossed the line.
There were questions about Pogacar's fitness after breaking his wrist during a race in April, but he won the sprint for third place, enough to give him a four-second bonus and give him an early lead over Vingegaard, who is considered his main rival in TdF 2023.
In this 182km stage and Medium-Mountain Stage, Briton Adam Yates beat his twin brother Simon to win the first stage of the 2023 Tour de France while claiming the yellow jersey marking the race leader.
Adam, 30, pulled out of Jayco AlUla Simon's rider in the final stages of an uphill finish to win his first Tour de France (TdF) stage.
Adam's two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar claimed third in the mini-group sprint ahead of the finish line.
"My brother met me. I don't know if I should work with him. I asked and they said 'Just do it'," Adam Yates said after the race.
Adam, who was initially unsure if he should continue attacking because Pogacar was his team-mate, added on ITV 4: "Amazing – I'm very happy."
"I know Simon is fine, I speak to him every day, we are very close, and sharing experiences with him is nice."
"I just wish he would pull a little easier because he almost knocked me down at one point," Adam said.
Simon said he suffered cramps on the final climb that had affected his speed at the finish line.
"There's a bit of cat-and-mouse rivalry on it, and Adam rolls forward," Simon Yates said.
"He gave Pogacar a nod, kind of like 'Can I go? What's the situation?' and it was a 'yes, sure', so he left and I went to rival him," Simon said.
"At first when he saw me coming, I thought he was in a difficult situation. He asked on the radio, 'Should I wait or continue?' At first, he wasn't exciting but I kind of knew that, I knew it was going to be complicated but at the same time I had to take that chance."
"Normally at finishes like that I wouldn't beat Pogacar or Vingegaard in a very fast sprint so getting away from Adam might be a chance," added the 30-year-old.
"We are usually quite close but I had cramps on the last climb. It was a humid day so unfortunately he beat me, but I'm sure more opportunities are coming."
