Reece James captains Chelsea

"Reece James became Chelsea captain", this news emerged after Chelsea FC officially appointed Reece James as the new captain for the club nicknamed the Blues. James replaces Cesar Azpilicueta who moved to Atletico Madrid this summer.

"Reece James has been officially confirmed as the new captain of Chelsea Football Club," the club's official website read.

Reece James was educated by Chelsea from the age of six

James is a product of the club's academy having been with him since the age of six. The England international then developed in the youth age group before being loaned to Wigan Athletic in July 2018.

James returned to Chelsea after a season-long loan spell and then made his first-team debut in September 2019 against Grimsby.

Since his first-team debut in September 2019, the 23-year-old defender has made 147 appearances in all competitions, scoring 11 goals and assisting 20.

"I am very happy to take on the role and responsibility as captain of the team," James said.

Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino said James' appointment as captain was a decision by himself and the club.

"This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very happy that Reece will captain the team this season," Pochettino said.
