New York City Mayor Accused of Sexual Harassment

Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, has been accused of sexual harassment. He denies allegations of sexual harassment against a woman he had been a co-worker with about 30 years ago. These allegations came to light after a lawsuit was filed against Adams in a local court recently.

As reported by AFP, on Friday (11/24/2023), the lawsuit filed on Wednesday (11/22) local time accused Adams of sexual harassment and discrimination against a woman who was his co-worker, when both worked for New York City about 30 years ago.

Civil lawsuit filed against Adams

"Plaintiff's sexual harassment, physical violence, and employment discrimination based on gender and sex, retaliation, hostile work environment, and intentional emotional suffering," the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit was filed civilly against Adams, with the plaintiff — who has not been named — seeking a trial and $5a million in damages.

The lawsuit document dated Wednesday (22/11) stated that the plaintiff had been "sexually harassed by defendant Eric Adams in New York in 1993 when they both worked for New York City".

Adams, who is the Democratic mayor of New York City, "categorically" denied the allegations. "I have never done anything that harms others. It never happened," he told local reporters.

According to a statement released by the New York City Mayor's office, Adams did not know the plaintiff and would never physically harm anyone.

"The mayor doesn't know who this person is. If they ever met, he doesn't remember it," a spokesman for New York City Hall said in a statement.

"But he will never do anything that physically harms another person and categorically denies the claims."

The lawsuit was filed under the New York Adult Survivors Act, a law passed last year that opens up a one-year window for past sexual abuse allegations to go to trial.

The lawsuit against Adams was filed ahead of the deadline for the limitation statute to end on Friday (11/24) local time.
