History of World Father's Day

Citing the Office Holiday page, the history of Father's Day has various versions of its own story.

One story mentions that Father's Day was first held on July 5, 1908, in Fairmont, West Virginia. The day was celebrated as one of the church services at the Central United Methodist Church.

The celebration was inspired by a mine accident in Monongah, West Virginia, that killed 361 people.

Grace Golden Clayton, a woman whose father was a victim of the disaster, suggested to the pastor that a special church service be held in memory of her father and the victims who died.

Another story mentions that the first key figure to commemorate Father's Day was Sonora Smart Dodd. A woman in Spokane, Washington whose father was a War veteran.

As a single parent, his father raised Mrs. Dodd and her 5 siblings.

Inspired by Mother's Day, Mrs. Dodd suggested Father's Day to honor her father's services. He proposed that June 5 coincide with the day of his father's death.

In the commemorative event, he did not give enough time to the organizers to put together the event. As a result, the event was postponed to the third Sunday of June. That was the first Father's Day celebration in June on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, WA.

Then in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended the day as a national holiday. Then in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson designated Father's Day as a holiday to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June.

That's a bit of information that can be conveyed. May the extraordinary services of the Father always encourage us. Happy Father's Day.
