Her last number was her biggest hit Someone You Loved, but when her voice broke, a huge crowd took over.

Even on Twitter, author Sarah Phelps wrote:

"Lewis Capaldi was held aloft by the crowd because the tics that overwhelmed him were so big, so important. very beautiful.  No one would have gotten it a few years ago, right? This love, care, kindness, and understanding, this is very important. We inched forward, we did it, despite everything."

What is Tourette syndrome?

Launching Mayoclinic, Tourette syndrome is a disorder that involves repetitive movements (motor tic) or sounds that cannot be controlled (vocal tic).

Tic, sudden, brief, intermittent movements or sounds are typical signs in people with Tourette syndrome. This tic can last from mild to severe. Tic itself is classified into two:

  • Simple tic: This sudden, brief, repetitive tic involves some muscle groups.
  • Tic complex: This distinct and coordinated movement pattern involves multiple muscle groups.

Examples of simple motor tics include blinking eyes, jerking the head, shrugging shoulders, to mouth movements. Meanwhile, complex motor tics, such as touching or smelling objects, repeating observed movements, stepping with certain patterns, to jump.

Examples of simple vocal tics, include snoring, coughing, clearing the throat, to barking. Meanwhile, complex vocal tics, such as repeating one's own or someone else's words/phrases, using vulgar, obscene, or swear words.

In patients who are already severe, Tourette syndrome symptoms can significantly interfere with communication and quality of life.

Causes of Tourette Syndrome

Quoted from the official page of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), cdc.org, the cause of Tourette syndrome now is unknown.

However, scientists are studying the causes and risk factors of Tourette syndrome. It is important to find better ways to manage and reduce a person's risk of developing Tourette syndrome.

So far, research suggests that genes play an important role in the cause of Tourette syndrome. Genetic studies found that Tourette syndrome is inherited as the dominant gene.

About 50 percent of parents pass the gene on to their children.

Research also shows that boys who have the Tourette syndrome gene are 3-4 times more likely to develop Tourette syndrome than girls.

In addition, this syndrome can also be triggered by abnormal metabolism of a chemical in the brain called dopamine.

Several other studies have also found that Tourette syndrome is a complex genetic disorder, in which there is a high probability of occurring due to many genes interacting with other factors in the environment.

Smoking during pregnancy, pregnancy complications, low birth weight, and infections are risk factors for a child experiencing Tourette syndrome. However, this needs further research.
