Knee ligament injury in pre-season session makes David Silva decide to retire

Since joining in 2020, Silva has seven goals and 18 assists in 93 games in all competitions. Unfortunately, the 2022/2023 season will be the last time Silva will be on the pitch.

Silva decided to retire, after suffering a knee ligament injury in the pre-season session. ACL injuries usually require a minimum of 6 to 7 months of recovery.

Silva will turn 38 in January. With a fairly old age, Silva will find it difficult to return to his best form.

"Today is so sad for me. Today is the time for me to retire from football that I have pursued all my life. It's time to say goodbye to colleagues who have been like family to me. I will miss you so much," Silva said in a farewell video on his social media account.

Silva began his professional career in 2003 with Valencia. He had loan spells at Eibar and Celta Vigo, before rising to the senior side.

Silva scored 32 goals in 168 appearances for Los Che with one Copa del Rey title. After that Silva moved to Manchester City which made his career skyrocket.

He played 10 seasons there with 77 goals and 140 assists in 436 games. There have been a total of 14 titles won, four of which were Premier League.

David Silva was also part of the Spain squad that won one World Cup and two European Cup titles from 2008 to 2012. He has 125 caps and 35 goals.
