Lyme disease, what disease is it?

According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Lyme disease is indeed most common in the United States.

Lyme disease or Lyme disease is an infection caused by bacteria of the genus Borrelia sp, which is transmitted through tick bites. This disease is quite dangerous because it can disrupt various organ systems of the body.

Lyme disease has a variety of symptoms, which generally appear gradually and are divided into several stages, namely:

  • Stage 1

Lyme disease stage 1 is characterized by the appearance of a skin rash shaped like an image of an archery target. This rash is a sign that bacteria are multiplying inside the blood vessels. The pattern of rash that is formed is generally redness in the area of the tick bite, surrounded by normal skin areas and surrounded again by reddish areas on the outside.

This type of rash is known as erythema migrans. Although erythema migrans are typical for Lyme disease, in some cases, this rash may not appear. The rash of erythema migrans usually appears about 1-2 weeks after the person is bitten by a tick.

  • Stage 2

Stage 2 Lyme disease usually occurs weeks to months after being bitten by a tick. In stage 2, Borrelia bacteria have spread throughout the body characterized by flu-like symptoms. Stage 2 Lyme disease can also cause complications such as meningitis, nervous disorders, or heart disease. Symptoms that mark stage 2 Lyme disease include:

    • Fever.
    • Chills.
    • Headache.
    • Muscle pain.
    • Enlarged lymph nodes.
    • Fatigue.
    • Sore throat.
    • Visual impairment.
  • Stage 3

Lyme disease stage 3 usually occurs if you are not treated at stage 1 or 2. Stage 3 can occur weeks, months, or even years after the tick bite. Symptoms of Lyme disease stage 3, among others:

    • Arthritis in one or more than one joint, especially large joints such as the knee.
    • Numbness of the legs and arms.
    • Arrhythmias.
    • Short-term memory impairment.
    • Mental disorders.
    • Difficult to communicate with.
    • Severe headaches.
    • Difficulty concentrating.
    • Encephalopathy.

Things That Increase Risk

As mentioned earlier, Lyme disease is caused by Borrelia sp. Four species of bacteria can cause Lyme disease in humans, namely Borrelia burgdorferi, Borrelia mayonii, Borrelia afzelii, and Borrelia garinii.

Borrelia bacteria are transmitted through tick intermediaries, often through ticks of the genus Ixodes sp., or in some cases, through ticks Amblyomma sp. Ixodes type of ticks are ticks that can suck blood as food, both human blood and animal blood. Borrelia bacteria are usually transmitted by Ixodes ticks.

Some things that can cause a person to be more susceptible to Lyme disease, among others:

  • Frequent activities in grassy areas. Ticks carrying Lyme disease often live in grassy areas. In addition to living on the skin of deer, ticks carrying this disease can also live on the skin of mice and other rodents. Frequent activities in grassy areas can cause a person to be more susceptible to ticks and contract Lyme disease.
  • Does not cleanse the body of lice. Although often active in grassy areas, someone who routinely cleans the skin from ticks can avoid Lyme disease.
  • Dress revealingly. Lice can land easily on the skin. By dressing openly, a person can be more easily infested with lice and exposed to Lyme disease.

That's a little information and experience Bella Hadid shares her battle with Lyme disease. Hope it is useful.
