The company leverages its water recycling expertise to brew beer made from the wastewater of residential buildings in San Francisco.

Epic Cleantec, a San Francisco-based water treatment company, teamed up with Devil's Canyon Brewing Co. to create Epic OneWater Brew.

It was a Kolsch-style beer made using recycled water from showers, sinks, and washing machines at Fifteen Fifty, a 40-story luxury apartment building.

"Buildings around the world use 14% of all drinkable water," Aaron Tartakovsky, CEO and co-founder of Epic Cleantec, told CNN.

"Almost no building reuses the water. That's what we want to change," he added.

The beer is not currently sold due to regulations prohibiting recycled wastewater from being used in commercial beverages, but it proved a huge success at a conference on sustainable building technologies.

"We ended up producing more than 7,000 cans, not as a commercial product, but as an educational effort," Tartakovsky said.

"It is meant to tell the story of water reuse in a new way. But, frankly, we didn't anticipate the overwhelming response we saw," he added.

Tartakovsky said his company is now in talks with other breweries around the world.

"We have a lot of people asking for more, just because in addition to the interesting environmental story, this beer also has a really good taste," he said.
