Raspberry Pi 5 with Twice the Performance
The Raspberry Pi Foundation this week introduced the latest generation of its minicomputer, the Raspberry Pi 5 with twice the performance.
Compared to the Raspberry Pi 4 launched in 2019, the Raspberry Pi 5 offers several advantages. One of them is in terms of processors which are now much more powerful.

The Broadcom BCM2712 chip embedded in the Raspberry Pi 5 is equipped with four 64-bit ARM Cortex-A76 CPUs with a speed of 2.4 GHz.
The Raspberry Pi 5 chip is twice as fast as its predecessor
Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton claims that the Raspberry Pi 5 chip is twice as fast as its predecessor. "This is the first Raspberry Pi computer to use a chip with an in-house design," Upton wrote on the Raspberry Pi 5 introduction page.
The graphics processing aspect has also improved, with the Broadcom VideoCore VII GPU capable of running two 4K60 monitors at once, compared to the single 4K30 monitor on the Raspberry Pi 4.

Raspberry Pi 5 also uses a new I/O controller chip called RP1 which provides two USB 3.0 connectors, two USB 2.0, along with Gigabit Ethernet, MIPI transceivers for cameras and screens, and general-purpose I/O (GPIO) 3.3V.
The range of accessories is updated. Raspberry Pi 5 users can use add-on-board HAT (hardware on top) with M.2 slot to install NVMe SSD storage.
Then, there is an active cooling accessory in the form of a small fan to cool the processor. The application processor in the Raspberry Pi 5 does have a higher maximum power consumption than its predecessor. That is up to 12 watts.
Therefore, as compiled from PC World, Friday (29/9/2023), Raspberry also provides a new USB-C power supply with a capacity of 27 watts (5V, 5A).
Raspberry Pi 5 is planned to be available in October in two versions, namely a variant with 4 GB RAM for 60 US dollars and an 8 GB RAM variant for 80 US dollars.
The banderol is more expensive than the Raspberry Pi 4 which sells for 35 US dollars for the 1 GB version. However, there is a possibility that other variants of the Raspberry Pi 5 will be presented at different prices.
The complete specifications of the Raspberry Pi 5 can be seen below:
- CPU 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 GPU VideoCore VII

Raspberry Pi itself is a mini computer made by the Raspberry Pi Foundation from England. The word "Pi" in the name stands for Python programming language that can be used to program Raspberry Pi for various purposes.
Besides being able to be used like a desktop PC, Raspberry Pi mini-computers that can run Linux-based Raspberry OS are widely used by users as brains in various devices such as IoT to robots.
