The film, adapted from Rumaan Alam's 2020 novel of the same name, tells the story of a family on vacation on Long Island when they are suddenly confronted by two strangers who tell them about a mysterious power outage. The situation quickly worsens as the world begins to crumble, leaving the two families having to try to survive together.
Synopsis of "Leave the World Behind"
The trailer begins when Amanda (Roberts) and her husband Clay (Ethan Hawke) open the door to meet G.H. (Mahershala Ali) and his wife Ruth (Myha'la Herrold). G.H. is the owner of the wealthy Airbnb where Amanda and her family live, and he arrives with an alert for them about a power outage. He claimed that there was something more than power outages that he could figure out through changing "world patterns".

Despite their disbelief, G.H.'s allegations were soon proven true when television aired reports of a massive cyberattack in the U.S. However, he says that "the truth is much scarier" than that, and the family soon finds themselves in a major disaster with mysterious happenings here and there.
Leave the World Behind not only addresses the apocalypse but also the prejudice when two very different families are forced to unite despite Amanda and Clay's discomfort with G.H. and Ruth.
Amid it all, however, there are some horrifying scenes as the world begins to crumble in this slowly constructed thriller, including what looks like a rain of blood from a single point in the sky and the chaos of nature on Earth.
Based on Rumaan Alam's novel of the same name, Leave the World Behind was written and directed by Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot).
The film stars Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, Myha'la Herrold, Kevin Bacon, Farrah MacKenzie, and Charlie Evans. Executive producers are Barack and Michelle Obama, Tonia Davis, Daniel M. Stillman, and Nick Krishnamurthy.
Before the thriller hits select theaters on November 22 and Netflix on December 8, it will open AFI Fest on October 25, 2023.
