The joining of Sam Altman and Greg Brockman (former President of OpenAI) was announced directly by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. In a post posted on X, Nadella said Altman and Brockman will join the advanced AI research team.

Microsoft is One of the Largest Shareholders in OpenAI

"We are excited to break the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, along with their colleagues, will join Microsoft to lead the advanced AI research team," Nadella said in his announcement, as quoted from The Verge, Monday (11/20/2023).

"We look forward to moving quickly to provide the resources needed for their success."

Altman replied to Nadella's tweet with a quote and said "Mission continues." Nadella responded to the tweet by giving a hint about Altman's new role at Microsoft.

"We've learned a lot over the years about how to provide space for founders and innovators to build independent entities and cultures within Microsoft, including Github, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn, and I look forward to you doing the same," Nadella said.

Despite Microsoft's hijacking of Altman and Brockman, Nadella said Microsoft remains committed to its partnership with OpenAI. Microsoft is one of the largest shareholders in OpenAI, with an investment value of around USD 10 billion.

Microsoft is also the exclusive cloud partner for OpenAI and Microsoft cloud services powering OpenAI products, research, and API services. Microsoft also integrates OpenAI's GPT service in a number of its products.

"We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI's new leadership team and working with them," said Nadella. Emmett Shear is OpenAI's new interim CEO appointed by the board, replacing Mira Murati who held the post for two days.

Altman's joining Microsoft was announced just hours after negotiations with OpenAI's board to bring him back as CEO ended in an impasse. Altman had negotiated to return as CEO of OpenAI, but four members of OpenAI's board of directors refused to step down and allowed him to return.
