History of World Children's Day

According to UNICEF's official website, World Children's Day is an annual celebration of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to promote children's welfare and rights.

This warning was first issued in 1954. However, the official UN website says, the name used to be Universal Children's Day.

Universal Children's Day also falls on November 20. The purpose of the commemoration is to encourage awareness and togetherness of people around the world to improve the well-being of children.

Only in 1990, did the name of the important international day change to World Children's Day until now. The year 1990 marked the anniversary of the UN General Assembly adopting the Declaration and Convention on the Rights of the Child.

So, why was November 20 chosen for Universal and World Children's Day? November 20 is an important date for the United Nations.

That date was the time when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1954. On the same date, but in 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Until now, November 20 is routinely commemorated as World Children's Day. On that day, space is created for children and young people to voice their opinions on issues that are important to them.

At the same time, World Children's Day offers everyone to advocate, promote, and celebrate children's rights, which translates into dialogue and action that will build a better world for children.
