Through his representative, "The Irishman" the star expressed deep sadness at the passing of Leandro De Niro Rodriguez to Page Six.
Leandro's cause of death is unknown
"I am deeply saddened and deeply saddened by the passing of my beloved grandson, Leo," Robert De Niro said.
"We greatly appreciate the condolences from everyone. We ask that we be given privacy to mourn the loss of our Leo."

Leandro De Niro Rodriguez's death was announced on Monday (3/7) by his mother, Drena De Niro, 51, the eldest of the actor's seven children, through an Instagram post.
She said she was very grieving and did not know how to live without her beloved son. Even so, she will try to persevere, continue her life, and spread love, so that she can still feel like the mother of her departed baby.
"You are so loved and appreciated and I hope that only love can save you," Drena said.
"I'm so sad, my dear. Rest in peace and Eternal Heaven, my dear child."
The cause of death was not immediately known, although drugs and drug-administering devices were reportedly found near Leandro's body.
Drena De Niro, 51, is the eldest of seven children. His mother, Diahnne Abbott, was Robert De Niro's first wife.
