The Risk of Diabetes Can Be Reduced by Regularly Drinking Black Tea

Researchers through a study presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Hamburg, Germany, found that drinking black tea regularly can reduce a person's risk of developing diabetes by almost half.

To reach that finding, the researchers involved 1,923 adults from eight provinces in China.

Of these, 436 participants had diabetes, 352 were prediabetic, and the rest had normal blood glucose levels.

They examined the frequency and type of tea consumed by the participants. Researchers found those who drank black tea daily had a 53 percent lower risk of developing prediabetes and a 47 percent lower risk of developing type-2 diabetes compared to people who never drank tea.

Type-2 diabetes occurs when cells develop insulin resistance, a condition in which cells do not respond normally to insulin—a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar.

Meanwhile, prediabetes is a condition of high blood sugar levels, but, it is not high enough to be considered diabetes.

A person is considered diabetic if their fasting blood sugar level is 126 mg/dL or higher in two separate tests, while they are considered prediabetic if their fasting sugar level is between 100 and 125 mg/dL.

Researchers attribute the protective effect on blood sugar management to the habit of drinking tea.

"Our findings hint at the protective effect of tea drinking habits on blood sugar management through increased excretion of glucose in the urine, increased insulin resistance, and thus better blood sugar control," said researcher Tongzhi Wu from the University of Adelaide, Australia.

Wu stressed the benefits were most pronounced among daily black tea drinkers. According to researchers, the secret to better metabolic control lies in the microbial fermentation in black tea.

The process produces bioactive compounds with antioxidant and inflammatory effects, which promote insulin sensitivity, better pancreatic beta cell performance, and alter the composition of gut bacteria.
