This victory continues to put Atletico at the top of the table. Los Colchoneros are fourth with 28 points from 12 games, two adrift of Barcelona (3) and four clear of Real Madrid (2) with a game in hand.
Meanwhile, Villarreal is unmoved in 14th position. Villarreal have only collected 12 points from 13 matches, only five points away from Celta Vigo in the relegation zone.

Villarreal appeared troublesome at the beginning of the first half. Gerard Moreno silenced the Atletico Madrid public after scoring the opening goal in the 20th minute.
Etienne Capoue teamed up with Alex Baena in the central area. The ball was then passed with a volley that Jan Oblak parried. The rebound ball rolled in the middle of the penalty area and was grabbed by Moreno with a shot into the bottom corner of the Atletico goal.
Atletico finally scored a counter-goal just before halftime. Axel Witsel got his name on the scoreboard to make it 1-1.

Rodrigo Riquelme's pass to Antoine Griezmann was passed with a cross. The ball rolled to Villarreal's far post before Witsel flicked in from close range.
Atletico Madrid's wave of attacks finally resulted in a second goal in the 80th minute. Marcos Llorente passed Koke's hull with a cross to the far post. Griezmann, who was standing unguarded, easily tapped in from in front of the goal.
Atletico turned to outscore Villarreal 2-1.
Samuel Lino sealed Atletico Madrid's victory with his goal five minutes later. Substitute Pablo Barrios had the ball on the right wing and then fired a cross.
Lino beat two Villarreal defenders before finishing with a left-footed strike into the top corner of Filip Jorgensen's goal. Atletico 3, Villarreal 1.
